London, Aug. 27, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Forward Deployed Engineer has become one of the best-paid jobs in technology before any standard existed to verify who can do it. Postings for the role grew 1,165% in a year, according to workforce data firm Live Data Technologies. OpenAI advertises positions at $200,000 to $400,000 in total compensation. Within days of each other this summer, AWS and Microsoft committed $3.5 billion between them to organisations that embed engineers inside customer companies. Artificial Intelligence Uni (AIU), a UK Registered Learning Provider and BCS Approved Centre, has opened global applications this month for the Certified Forward Deployed Engineer (CFDE)™, built as the first certification standard for the role.

CFDE is an AIU-issued credential at three levels. It has a published assessment rubric, a certification examination separate from the training course, and a public verification register through which any employer can confirm a graduate's status. The Foundation programme opens first: 18 weeks online, 15 weekly modules and a three-week capstone in which each learner ships a working AI system against a real business brief, assessed by practitioners rather than by multiple choice.
The curriculum was piloted on-premises in London with a first cohort in 2025 and refined over twelve months before opening globally. Learners build hands-on against production systems from regulated industries: retrieval-augmented generation with citations, agentic automation pipelines, multi-tenant SaaS architecture, PII redaction, automated evaluation harnesses, and agent memory systems: patterns drawn from compliance platforms developed under frameworks including Ofgem's NIS regime. Every learner works throughout in CallGPT 6X, a multi-model AI workspace included with the programme, and the curriculum draws on research from the Sovereign AI Lab, which publishes with DOIs and releases open models and datasets on HuggingFace.
The price sits well below the market forming around the role. Comparable production AI engineering programmes from UK universities' continuing-education arms are priced from £5,495 to £8,495. CFDE Foundation costs £1,099. Under the AIU Access Scholarship, nationals of the 72 economies the World Bank classifies as low income or lower-middle income pay £549 for applications received by 6 September, and £769 by 20 September. The same reduction applies to applicants anywhere in the world who are currently between roles. There is no application fee, and every fee band is confirmed by a human reviewer before payment is requested. The cohort commences 19 October; enrolment closes 5 October.
"The engineers best positioned to carry AI into businesses across South Asia, Africa and Latin America are priced out of most Western training," said Noman Shah FBCS, founder of AIU. "We set one bar for everyone and priced the seat to the economy the applicant comes from. An engineer should compete on ability, not on purchasing power."
On the credential, Shah said: "Companies invented this role faster than education responded. A Forward Deployed Engineer needs engineering craft, model fluency, and the judgement to make AI work inside a client's constraints. That is teachable, and it deserved a standard: a published rubric, a real examination, a register an employer can check. Not another playlist of tutorials."
