Beyond the Screen: The Heart and Soul of "Stronger Than Words
Tustin, United States - April 16, 2026 / Get Safe USA /
TUSTIN, CALIFORNIA, April 10, 2026 – A new entry in the 2026 Easterseals Disability Film Challenge, titled Stronger Than Words, is drawing attention to the growing role of storytelling in shaping how disability is represented in media. The project reflects ongoing efforts supported by Get Safe to encourage more inclusive narratives through film and creative expression.
The film is part of the annual disability-focused filmmaking initiative, which invites participants to create short films within a limited timeframe and a defined theme. The challenge has gained recognition for encouraging authentic representation and increasing participation from creators with lived experiences.
At Get Safe, the mission focuses on empowering individuals and communities through safety training and prevention education. The organization promotes changing mindsets and reducing fear to support safer, more inclusive environments.
A Creative Sprint with a Purpose
The Easterseals Disability Film Challenge is a prestigious national competition that challenges filmmakers to produce authentic stories about disability within a five-day timeline. From the first line of the script to the final edit, the team, led by Director Stuart Haskin, completed the entire production within 120 hours.
The goal was clear: to support authentic and respectful representation by casting a man with Down syndrome in the lead role.
The Story: Finding Strength in Connection
The film follows Benjamin, a young man with Down syndrome who experiences bullying.
Frustrated, he retreats to his room, where he meets Roy, a bright orange puppet that comes to life. Their interaction becomes central to the film’s message:
Self-acceptance: Roy explains that everyone is different, and being different does not make someone less.
Unique gifts: Benjamin initially believes he has no special talents, but Roy helps him recognize his ability to connect with others and bring positivity through his presence.
True strength: The story highlights that real strength comes from the mind and heart, not just physical ability.
The story builds toward a moment between Benjamin and his father, who offers reassurance and reminds him that he is valued, kind, and capable.
Facing the Hard Truths
While Stronger Than Words presents an imaginative and emotional journey, it is grounded in a real concern. Research shows that individuals with disabilities are two to three times more likely to experience bullying than their non-disabled peers. Bullying can take many forms, including physical, verbal, social, and cyber, and it often occurs in schools, workplaces, and community settings.
Director Stuart Haskin said these experiences can stay with individuals long after they occur. “We are committed to meeting every individual where they are—with empathy, respect, and dignity.” By sharing Benjamin’s story, the film aims to reach audiences early and reinforce the importance of self-worth and inclusion.
A Message from the Cast
The film concludes with a public service message featuring members of the cast and crew, including Aaron, Benjamin, Roy, Stuart, Caitlin, and Pete. The message focuses on awareness and shared responsibility:
You are not alone
Be kind to one another
If you see something, say something
Be a good reporter and support others
How You Can Support the Movement
Stronger Than Words premiered on April 4, 2026. Viewers are encouraged to take part in the two-week awareness effort by watching and sharing the film across available platforms.
