Turkey Trot in the cold: a Hamilton podiatrist on stride, stretching and dry socks
Hamilton, United States - October 21, 2026 / Cincinnati Foot & Ankle Care (Hamilton, OH) /
The Hamilton Turkey Trot starts at Marcum Park on Thanksgiving morning. A Hamilton podiatry practice shares advice on stride, stretching and socks for a cold race day.
Thanksgiving morning in Hamilton starts at Marcum Park. The Meyer Brothers & Sons Hamilton Turkey Trot is on November 26, 2026, starting at 116 Dayton St, and runners, walkers, joggers and stroller-pushers can take part in the 10K, 5K, or free Kids Fun Run. Event proceeds support YoungLives. For many people it is the coldest run of the year so far.
Cincinnati Foot & Ankle Care, which has a Hamilton location on Hamilton Mason Road, says late-November mornings bring a different set of foot and ankle problems than summer running. The American Podiatric Medical Association notes that some runners compensate for icy conditions by altering how their foot strikes the ground. Instead, APMA advises runners to shorten their stride to help maintain stability.
Cold muscles are another factor. According to APMA, cold weather can make you less flexible in winter than you are in summer, so it is more important than ever to stretch before a run, and moisture-wicking active wear helps runners stay warm and dry. The practice adds that pre-workout calf stretches can reduce muscle tightness, and that wick socks instead of cotton and the right running shoes can prevent blisters.
Podiatrists Nickolas A. Minnie, DPM, and Matthew Novak, DPM, see patients in Hamilton, one of 11 Cincinnati Foot & Ankle Care locations in the area.
The Hamilton location is at 3035 Hamilton Mason Road, Suite 105, in the medical building on the Bethesda Butler Hospital campus. Free parking is available.
"On a cold Thanksgiving morning, people tend to skip the warm-up and then change the way they run once the pavement feels slick. Stretching first, taking shorter steps and wearing socks that stay dry go a long way toward finishing without a strained ankle or a blister," said a spokesperson for Cincinnati Foot & Ankle Care.
- Stretch your calves before you start, even if you plan to walk.
- On slick pavement, shorten your stride instead of changing how your foot lands.
- Wear wick socks instead of cotton to keep feet dry.
- Run or walk in shoes you have already broken in.
- If foot or ankle pain lasts after race day, have a podiatrist take a look.
